$GOOG navigation on Motorola Droid a hot feature

The Droid also has Google Maps, but it’s Google Maps with Navigation – and it really, really rocks. It does nearly everything the iPhone Maps app does, with the addition of toggleable layers (show/hide traffic, satellite views, Wikipedia entries, and transit lines), support for Google’s Latitude location-sharing service and, most notably, completely free turn-by-turn voice navigation. You can also search for locations by voice, something we were surprised was absent when Apple added voice recognition to the iPhone.

The scientific study of complex systems has transformed a wide range of disciplines in recent years, enabling researchers in both the natural and social sciences to model and predict phenomena as diverse as the failure of materials, earthquakes, global warming, demographic patterns, and financial crises. In this talk, Didier Sornette describes a simple, powerful, and general theory of how, why, and when stock markets crash. Most attempts to explain market failures seek to pinpoint triggering mechanisms that occur hours, days, or weeks before the collapse. Sornette proposes a radically different view: the underlying cause can be sought months and even years before the abrupt, catastrophic event in the build-up of cooperative speculation, into an accelerating rise of the market price, otherwise known as a "bubble." This view implies the possibility of predicting such events and Sornette will describe the current status of predictions that he and his collaborators have made for events in various markets.

U.S. Existing Home Sales Data - ADJUSTED!

Adjusting Existing Home Sales for actual prices

$AIG and others recently caught huge bids on the notion that existing home sales data out of the NAR was very encouraging (good source: http://www.usinspect.com/blog/existing-home-sales-for-june). It was widely repeated that home sales were UP over a one year period for the first time in July 2009.

I had an inkling that these oh so encouraging numbers might be very skewed by the fact that the actual home VALUES have imploded over the same period. Today I have taken the time to compile the NRA data into a spreadsheet that would give me the actual DOLLAR VALUE of existing homes sold, which I find to be a way more insightful number.

As you can see from the charts attached, the unit sales were of course up when comparing July 2009 to July 2008, but in dollar terms, sales are still down a whopping eleven percent. Based on these numbers, sales havent reached the level of July 2008, but October 2008. What looks like a reversal of course in the "units sold" chart could just as well be a bounce in an ongoing downtrend in the $$ based chart.

If you've been seeing an end of the housing slump in the widely available data - you'd better look beyond the optimistic numbers that all the talking heads like to repeat..

$GS - Government Sachs owns the FBI, too!

My really brief primer on the Goldman Algorithm Theft

- some guy worked for GS as a VP and supervised algorithmic trading

- he left GS in June

- GS called the FBI they became aware he stole a program from them

- the FBI started surveillance on the former VP's house the NEXT DAY

- the FBI arrested the former VP TWO DAYS after the GS call

- the D.A. states that immediate action was necessary b/c the software could be used to "manipulate markets" if it came into the wrong hands

- no officials worried about how GS could use the software to manipulate markets

- no officials gave any explanation on why the FBI would act SO QUICKLY without having the time of even doing more than 24h of checking on GS's claims against their former VP

Hell, why not give Goldman Sachs executive powers right away? How about outsourcing the FBI to them right away?

I'm sure they could turn it into a very profitable organization! Someone pinch me, please.

This was taken with my Nokia phone cam and mailed in directly from the Verona Amphitheatre.

No rehearsing, no editing, no Intro - so not your usual finz.tv quality, but in return practically live at 9pm Verona time which is 3pm eastern.

(For clarification: This is only the last LIVE episode, not the last edited one. We will hit you with more footage taken during our trip when we are back to our respectivr headquarters..)

Inalienable, recently forgotten, rights

If I wake up tomorrow dead, because some gooberheads and chowderbrains blew up my great home state of Texas, I want you to do me a favor. I want you to read the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights and that plaque at Lady Liberty's feet and I want you to uphold them. I ask you to defend those words because they are what have made this country great, up until recent decades when our country has stopped being as great as perhaps it once was, because we stopped upholding those words.

I ask you not to uphold those words for just some Americans, or all Americans, or anyone with whom you happen to agree. I ask you to please uphold those words for all men and women regardless of race, creed, color, gender, place of origin, current whereabouts, sexual orientation, preference in music, or whether or not they agree with what's in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights and that plaque at Lady Liberty's feet. I want you to promise me that if I die because of terrorism, you will uphold these words and extend them to the very people who killed me. Why? Because the Bush administration didn't uphold these words. The Obama administration is not upholding these words. Nancy Pelosi, when she was told about waterboarding and she didn't do a doubletake and spit out her dentures, she didn't uphold these words. She bowed to overwhelming pressures when it was her JOB not to. NONE of our civil servants are upholding these words, and it's not the words that protect us but our vigilance and dedication to them. That is what protects us, or rather would protect us, if someone was actually doing that and no one is. Our civil servants are not upholding the very words that give them jobs. So if the Lone Star State explodes in a glorious fireball because gooberheads and chowderbrains took my inalienable rights, I ask you please to not take theirs. Turnabout is NOT fair play. It's cheating. We're better than them.

Inalienable rights mean just that. Life, Liberty, and Happiness for everybody; not just the people you don't mind having in your backyard. If we don't do this, if we don't continue to uphold those words as a beacon of justice and equality to the rest of the world, it's not that the terrorists win. Screw the terrorists. They're gooberheads and chowderbrains. They can't win.

If we don't do this, We The People lose, and we have only ourselves to blame.

Rangers / Capitals Video

It was so cool being there, even though the Rangers really got their
asses kicked by the Capitals - and by the referees, too!

I was also very surprised by how good the music they played during the
breaks was. I could see myself being a regular at these games as long
as ticket prices are reasonable and I could get seats that are not in
the few blind spot areas that unfortunately we were in yesterday.

But I won't complain, it was an absolutely stunning experience on so
many levels. Going into the maybe 10th or 15th floor of a building
that doesn't look very different from the surrounding buildings and
suddenly standing right where I recorded that video is so impressive
when all arenas you know are way out of town and can be recognized for
what they are from miles away..

I always wondered what the fuzz was about those "I (HEART) NY" bumper
stickers. It's now so obvious.

Noch hänge ich nach einem stressigen Flugtag in der Abflughalle für die Inlandsflüge fest, und Flughäfen haben ja nun wirklich fast alle ihre Eigenheiten auf dem Altar der Globalisierung geopfert - aber trotzdem und nach nur gut 1 Stunde 'on US soil' beschleicht mich die Vorahnung, daß ich mich ganz schrecklich in die Zeit hier verlieben könnte.

Vielleicht steht der erste Satz, den man hier an mich gerichtet hat als passender Stellvertreter dafür. Er kam aus dem Mund einer endvierziger Beamtin, die meine Zolldeklaration ansah und auf meine noobish-unsichere Frage ob das so OK sei antwortete. "You're fine, honey!"

Insgesamt hätte ich einfach viel mehr Feindseligkeit und Einschüchterung erwartet, als mir tatsächlich entgegengebracht wurde. Der Immigrationsinquisitor war bestenfalls brummelig und hat sachlich persönliche Fragen nach den Gründen meiner Reise gestellt, und außer der Entsorgung ein paar nicht immigrationsfähiger Minisalamis hatte ich weder Opfer noch irgendwelche beamtlichen Dämlichkeitehn zu beklagen.

Vor allem merke ich aber jetzt schon geradezu schmerzlich intensiv, welche enorme Freude es mir bereitet, in den Klang des amerikanischen Idioms einzutauchen. Seit mittlerweile mehreren Jahren lese ich wahrscheinlich mehr Englisch als Deutsch, und ich habe schon lange angefangen, eine semantische Romanze dazu zu entwickeln, daß das, was deutsch einfach nur falsch ist, auf englisch einfach ein intuitiv verstandener kreativ-nützlicher Umgang mit sprachlichen Möglichkeiten ist.

Natürlich weiß ich bei all dem auch um meine permanente, latente Genervtheit von Borniertheit, ethnozentristischer Arroganz und den everpresent häßlichen Auswirkungen einer offensichtlichen gesellschaftlichen Überdosis Angst.

Aber wahrscheinlich wird es während einer knappen Woche Aufenthalt ein leichtes sein, das vorerst unter den Tisch zu kehren.

How to use your autofocus mobile cam as a scanner / photocopier / brain

piece about how you can put your beloved little gadget to use for just

I wanted to elaborate on a couple more things as this is something
which I have been doing for over a year now, and maybe some of you can
make use of the bits of knowledge I picked up along the road!

Why look for the cable when you can e-mail your "scans"?

Steve recommended hooking up your phone to your PC after you took the
pictures. As I never seem to have my PC connection cable handy when I
need it, I am taking a different approach. Because I have my E71
connected to my WiFi at home anyway, I usually just e-mail my "scans"
to my Gmail account. It's usually faster than hooking up the phone,
and as an extra bonus I get to keep the pictures in my Gmail archive
if I want.

Increase your printout quality with smart resampling!

I also find that when printing out copies of them, it usually pays off
to "upsample" them before they get sent to your printer. To do this, I
usually resize the pictures with my photo processing software so that
my printer will not have to do the resizing necessary to bring the
photo to its native 300dpi resolution. The photo sofware (I use
IrfanView for such simple tasks, it's just super fast to open and do
the stuff with) does a MUCH better job of making the picture 300dpi
than your printer does, due to the better algorithms implemented.
(Just be sure to do "high quality resampling" with the s/w you use).
If your software doesn't offer natively to calculate the necessary new
300dpi pixel size for your image, it might be worth to calculate it
yourself: Take the width of the printout (page width minus page
margins) and multiply it with 300. That's the width your resized
snapshot should have. You need to do this only once for the paper size
in your part of the world of course and can resize all the graphics
you will ever want to print out to that width.

Also, if you just want to do a very rough snapshot that you will not
want to take the extra processing step later on, you might want to
take a snapshot in black/white right away and set the exposure to
produce a slightly darker picture. If your phone offers it, save those
settings as "photocopy" or something that you find meaningful!

Get an external brain!

One last thing, and for me the absolutely most used of them all, is to
use the snapshots to (over time) form a huge external brain holding
all the bits and pieces you might ever want to remember. I use a piece
of software for that which I can hardly imagine living without
anymore. It's called EVERNOTE, and it's free for basic usage. For
heavy users like me (I have approximately 5000 notes in my accounts!),
it costs around 50$ per year. For my personal usage, I consider that
an absolute bargain, but YMMV.

What Evernote does, is that you get a private E-Mail address that you
can mail anything to (not only snapshots, but also text, or webclips
or whatever, just take a look at their website for a demo video) and
that gets then put into your account. Once your observations are in
there, you can tag them, put them in folders or e-mail them to others.
But the niftiest part is that Evernote will automatically run an OCR
over your pictures that will find almost any form of text in your
images, even if it is handwriting, and index it for you. It works a
lot "better" than any other OCR because (afaik) it does not store only
the "one correct word" for every piece of writing it finds but will
occasionally opt to store multiple candidates for what it thinks the
letters it found might mean.

What that means for you is that you will be able to find (via a
google-esque search bar in the Evernote web- oder desktop app)
pracatically ANY word in your pictures, even if it showed up out of
focus, upside down, or in any other hard-to-read way.

I take snapshots of shop's business hours, products I want to
remember, business cards, CD covers and stuff like that all the time
and then instantly forget them because I know Evernote can "recall"
them for me. It really helps to protect my brain from the common
information overload that is so easy to get yourself into these days.

I am off to Toronto and Montreal this week for my yearly ‘Le Tour' trip with high school and college buddies. It's the 8th year that a group of 40 of us get together to pull hamstrings and complain about our backs.

Have not been in the blogging mode so have decided to go back and start finishing the hundreds of posts I have started over the last year.

Today's rewrite is inspired by a post (from a while ago) Fred Wilson wrote about Economists and Models . Great links so read them. I have an economics degree and I always hated the damn courses. They just were easy and I was lazy.

I am sooooo sick of the word ‘SPEND'. I am especially sick of these two words together ‘GOVERNMENT SPENDING' .

This crisis of confidence could not have come at a worse time, but we created it. We waste, we hate, we lie, we ignore. We need a government and leadership that turns these 4 characteristics upside down. I believe the markets and confidence are broken until we get leadership that truly focuses on these issues domestically.

We need more teachers and less government employees and lobbyists.

We need more music and less executives.

We need more public companies and less bankers.

We need more ideas and honesty and less regulation.

I am reminded of the great Seinfeld episode where George decides to do the OPPOSITE of every instinct. Good things start to happen. I am thinking about the same thing now as it relates to spending. Even if the government is talking about spending, how about shutting the f##*k up and teach Americans a little bit about saving and investing.

I love Lou Reed and his original white rap. I generally start all my plane flights listening to 4 or 5 of my favorite Lou Reed songs/riffs. Today, ‘Strawman' hit me hard.

If you read this blog you know I have been downsizing since 2005. Home, cars, employees (until lately), office size etc...

As Lou Reed says: ‘ Does anybody need another million dollar movie, does anyone need another million dollar star, does anyone really need a 60k car, does anyone need another president, does anyone need another politician caught with his pants down and money sticking out of his hole.'

We have lived rather large for a very long time. We went ‘ALL IN' in a ‘TOO BIG TooFail' mentality at precisely the wrong time.

In reality, the new world is about being small, under the radar, as I wrote a few months back, being “Too Small to Fail'.

The next generation of the web is all about too small to fail. Ebay is not too big to fail. They are failing at many levels. Yahoo...too big, too many VP'S; Time Warner...gag.

The new world will be about community, small ones...POWERFUL ones. Communities that share and ones that are civil. The tools have all been built and now the communities are starting to thrive. With today's tools like Twitter, you can get the social network you deserve. It is a powerful, leveragable force of nature and it is upon us. Stocktwits has as many subscribers on twitter as Wall Street Journal and we are 5 months old.

Take the time and crank this song from the Arctic Monkeys each day. Young people, hard rock in a classic way. It always gets me ready to crank. ‘From the Ritz to The Rubble'.

Long time no blog

Well,

it seems like I couldn't easily get into the blog thing on a regular basis. I will try to give it one more go, knowing that I will probably fail again, but there's no other way to find out but trying.

I find the market to be in an extremely interesting phase at the moment, and after having lost a lot of interest in it for a lot of the time between now and my last post in summer 2005 (my systems kept running and making money, luckily), I am now totally involved with watching the market react to all those scary things going on.

If I manage to remember writing in here, I will soon write about the major developments I see right now and how I plan to act with that knowledge.

But now, the US market eagerly awaits the hundreds of orders I'll have my systems throw at it at the open today. Back to work..

Some hypes

/Obviously, there are enough brainless (retail?) investors out there again!/

I was in the fortunate position of being long NWD and BCON, the first
for fundamental reasons and since spring, and the latter due to my trend
follower's recent buy signal (also published here, I think).

These stocks have been skyrocketing in a way that not only made me
reduce or sell my positions, but also makes me think that this market
has bubble-style characteristics at least in some of the stocks. For one
thing, this obviously means that there are people out there that want
certain stocks at any price. But I have also seen this sort of moves
around medium-term market tops more than once. When greed becomes so
powerful, it may easily turn into fear.

Being a psychologist, I have some ideas about why that may be the case,
but for now, I'll just leave it at this observation.

Quick note

Just a quick note:

My short term system thinks this is a buyable dip, but my intermediate term systems lean more towards the short side.

All the oil stocks (my HypeVol Trendfollower has a lot of them) got a decent beating today that erased gains from about 1-2 weeks. That and some super-extended charts in energy stocks make me a little cautious about oil. It's been taking so many mag covers lately, I think it might be due for a little correction. This, of course, would mean further trouble for my trendfollowing positions..

My short term systems, by the way, have almost 0% short exposure right now - they used to have a lot more in the last weeks. Shorted MAIN yesterday and today, one of my long term long holdings. If it was on the systems scan list, NWD, also a long term long, would have gotten shorted also, I guess.

So much for today. Back to work..

New trend follower positions

My trend follower digged up two new positions for this week.
The system is long very heavily, which does not fit to my idea of the market internals getting weaker and my discretionary inclination towards the short side.

However, that system has been very successful in the past months, and I have no good reason to believe this would change soon.

The two new stocks are ELON and LTXX.
